G’day from Down Under!
You may or may not know but Michelle and I have spent the last year living on the East Coast of Australia. We decided that we would love to make a difference while on this incredible adventure together and we have been lucky enough to have been chosen to partake in this years’ Spring Shitbox Rally!
So… what is it? The Shitbox Rally is the largest community lead fundraiser for Cancer Council in Australia and is now in its 15th year. The idea is to find a car worth absolutely nothing, drive it across this beautiful country that we are lucky enough to call our home for now and experience everything the Australian Outback wants to throw at us (sun, spiders, and breakdowns included). We will start our epic road trip in Alice Springs, the heart of Australia and finish eight days later (hopefully!!), in the home of Surfer’s Paradise in the Gold Coast, just south of Brisbane.
We would love to have your support along the way with all donations going towards Cancer Council, a charity close to both of our hearts. As a nurse who has worked in oncology, Michelle has witnessed just how incredible cancer charities are at supporting patients along their entire journey. Having both lost loved ones over the years to various different forms of this terrible disease, it is a cause that we would like to make a difference for. So… we are going to do just that and plan to spend the next 7 months making that happen!
So what happens next?... We have our noble steed, and you will hear more about her later! I suppose a few spare tyres might not go to waste either. We will also have to get our hands dirty getting her rally-ready, which we think you’ll all have a good laugh about. We are going to take care of the gear and the vehicle, but we will need help raising the money to make the donation. Before we hit the road, we need to raise a minimum of $5000. We plan on blowing that out of the water though! These funds will go to Cancer Council and we are extremely proud to be doing our part to support such a worthy charity.
Keep an eye on our socials over the next few months. We’re gonna keep you all updated with photos, videos, and stories. We would love you to join us on this journey and be a part of all the funny happenings from our preparations here in the Whitsunday's, getting safe and sound to the Outback, and finally hitting the road to the Gold Coast! Be sure to check out our donations page, and don’t be shy throwing a few pennies in!
Thanks for taking the time to read this, and we can’t wait for what’s to come!
Darragh & Michelle
Shitbox Rally is the adventure of a lifetime challenging participants and their cars, worth no more than $1,500, on a 7 day drive across Australia to raise money for cancer research.
The rally is not a race – it’s a fun, colourful, unpredictable adventure with participants travelling at their own pace in smaller groups. Vehicles often break down but “we never leave anyone behind” and each night is spent camping beneath the stars and celebrating the day’s achievements. It all adds up to an incredible opportunity to see Australia’s vast and beautiful countryside and make lifelong friends, many brought together after experiencing cancer themselves or seeing cancer impact family and friends.
Since it’s inception the rally has been the largest fundraiser for the Cancer Council nationally.
Shitbox Rally is a dedicated fundraising event for cancer research with funds going to Cancer Council.
Cancer Council is one of the largest non-government funders of cancer research in Australia. We conduct and fund research studies across all cancers and all stages of the cancer journey.
Thanks to the community funds raised such as Shitbox Rally we can fund world-class research that reduces the impact of cancer for everyone.
$59 million over the past 15 years has been raised by Box Rallies to date, supporting ground-breaking projects such as:
These projects wouldn’t be possible without your support.
